Away Team Report: Our chief reporter takes a step back this week as he is The Unexpected Star of the Show. The first 4 frames were evenly fought containing three black ball games. At the start of frame five not even an eternal optimist would have forecast what would be the outcome. Paul knocked in a smooth 30 break early doors and threatened to run riot. Phil however after a shaky start kept Paul at bay with good baulk line safety. Mid frame, as if a switch had been turned on, Phil's alter ego appeared. His idol Alex Higgins wouldn't have picked off a series of long reds any better and by the colours Paul's lead hadn't increased. One colour would have ended the frame but the yellow rattled in a top pocket and Phil despatched it along with the greeen and an excellent brown. Needing one snooker and the remaining colours a shock was still a longshot. Phil potted the blue and played a containing safety on the pink. A couple of times Paul rolled the pink close to a pocket but not close enough. With the black very close to a side rail Phil played an incredible three cushion snooker resulting in the pink snuggled up to the black. With pink in the middle of the table the escape was not straight forward despite being off one cushion. Paul missed by a fraction. Phil potted a superb pink and the cue ball nudged the black off of the cushion and into a half ball cut shot back into a top pocket. Phil held his nerve and sunk it to win by 3 points. A comeback of Lazarus proportions and epic sporting shocks came to mind. 1990 Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, James Cahill beating 6 times champion Ronnie O' SUllivan in the 2019 World Championships and Leicester City winning the Premier League in the 2015/2026 season. A routine 60 and 30+ by Paul in frame six levelled the match. A night that our captain will never forget. I wonder if next week he will appear wearing a fedora and be chain smoking and drinking pints of vodka and orange. The Academy lads were brilliant and it was a great night. KJ
