Home Team Report: Our Premier League adventure came to an end as Woodbridge significantly boosted their own chances of retaining a place at the top table next season.
Despite results, we can all sincerely say how much we’ve enjoyed the ride. I didn’t imagine I’d ever get to play in the top division and I hope the experience will serve me well in the future. A number of frames have been much closer than headline scores may suggest and we’ve rarely been comprehensively outplayed throughout a whole night. However, the league table doesn’t lie and we are where we are!
At his best, Ryan hits the ball as sweetly as anyone and so it proved this time. His touch play was sublime across both his frames. He found the pace of the table immediately and gave a masterclass in positional play. Breaks of 42 and 43 were brought to premature ends by unfortunate in-offs and there was also a tidy 31 to add into the mix as well. 2 – 0 to Woodbridge.
Chris and Pete were evenly matched not just in ability but tactical approach, too. Both looked to take the game to the other, with safety shots at a premium. Pete got over the line and took Woodbridge 3-0 up.
A break of 30 in the fourth frame helped Pete secure the match and featured a fantastic long red, cleanly potted into the yellow pocket.
The last two frames were very absorbing and highlighted the contrast in styles between me and Shakeel. Reds were clustered for much of both frames and we slowly unpicked them with a series of good safety shots. In the fifth, Shakeel steadily built a lead (25 by the green) through some astute tactical play and snookers. As so often seems to happen, I then burst into life at the end of the frame and potted green to pink, needing just the black to force the re-spot. But… I left it in the jaws and that was that! The final frame followed a similar pattern but trying to get a snooker on the pink proved too big a task.
Congratulations to Woodbridge on their win and thanks to both Terry and Ray who support their side each week without necessarily playing.
