Away Team Report: New season – old story! In a repeat of last years opening match Woking were again triumphant this time going 1 point better. The main difference however was the standard of billiards on show. On a most enjoyable evening there was some excellent billiards played by all parties with 6 high breaks and several others in the low 20’s. In the 1st match Steve D quickly established a 30 point lead which he maintained until he passed 100. Paul then staged a fightback with a 20+ break taking him into a 1 point lead. However Steve quickly re-established his lead and ran out with a well constructed unfinished 25. In frame 2 both players got off to excellent starts with Steve B opening up with a 25 break on his 1st visit. Lol responded well and tied the scores in the 40’s. But potting superbly Steve then put together a 39 break to establish a good lead. Lol unfortunately missed a couple of reasonable opportunities which allowed Steve to pull away and win comfortably with several breaks in the teens. We could only remember one missed red off the spot from Steve all game, an excellent display of potting and cue ball control around the black and blue spots. In the final frame it wasn’t a case of who would win but by how far! An early mistake from me gave Mark a good opportunity from which he made a brilliant 47 which only stopped on a bad contact forcing him out of position. A good 20 brought me back on his heels but then a couple of teen’s and another brilliant 40+ put Mark into a big lead with me wondering if I was going to get the 1 point I needed to claim a point. A “surprising” (for me!) long pot on Mark’s white took care of that and I was delighted to then make a good 34 from the resulting double baulk foul which had me harbouring thoughts of a rare 2nd point. However a poor positional shot forced a missed in-off and Mark scored the remaining 12 he needed. It really is a pleasure to watch Mark in action and congratulations to him on his magnificent performance in reaching the last 8 of the English Amateur Championships recently.
P.S. With the change in the draw rules he’ll have a different lamb to slaughter in the return match at New Haw. LMAO!!
