Home Team Report: As the song says “Oh What a Night!” but there’s another song which better describes the evenings events “Sorry, I’m So Sorry!” On a very long, but exciting evening, once again the real winner was the New Haw table as three tough matches produced an 11.20pm finish! 1st up were Steve Dale and Andy Allen. In the early exchanges while Andy struggled to find his game Steve let’s say “enjoyed” the majority of the run and passed 100 nearly 40 points ahead. At that point however, Steve seemed to lose his way and Andy found some form culminating in a very nice 26 break which took him into the lead for the 1st time. He extended that lead and looked certain to win until Steve somehow found the good shots he needed to nick the frame by a mere 5 points. Next up myself and Tony Charlton battled out a really turgid frame that took well over an hour. I continued where I left off with Mark McIntyre, still struggling to hit the ball straight and Tony it seemed was never able to come to terms with our very difficult table. As a result the frame was littered with many, many mistakes and poor shots but I was fortunate enough to get the better of the run that was going and managed to eke out the win. In the final frame (which only started at 10.15!!) Martin started very well to pass 50 with a reasonable lead. However, Lol managed to catch him in the 60’s and they stayed virtually level until about 90. Then Martin had a very good 23 and some other small breaks to move into the 140’s while Lol was still in the 110’s. All over? No! With “Sorry” sounding out after virtually every visit Lol kept eating away at the target while Martin seemed unable to trip over the winning line. And when he passed Martin to lead 148 – 147 it seemed Lol was going to gain the unlikeliest of victories, a real “steal”. Unfortunately he missed his (difficult) opportunities and Martin eventually potted an easy red to take a deserved win. This was another great result for New Haw which came oh so close to being brilliant, and despite more “Sorry’s” than Ronnie Corbett, more line-ups than a parade ground, less gathering than a rolling stone and confirmation of the old adage “It’s not what you miss, it’s what you leave”, I have to say all the luck (both good and bad) was accepted in the best of spirits and it really was a terrific & sporting match. Thanks again lads for a most enjoyable evening.
