Away Team Report: With both teams being in the danger zone and as over the years we have built up respect and friendship for each other it was always going to be a difficult game to play. When we arrived Martin and Mick were there but Dave was at a function in London and was going to arrive a little later. We started the match with Martin playing Dan, Martin raced away to an early 40+ point lead playing some very fluent billiards with his signature “middle cross loser” working very well but Dan stuck to his task and got back to around 20 behind around the 100 mark. I thought the game would be close but Martin pushed on again and in the end Dan was relieved to get over 100. In frame 2 Mick got off to a bright start and was very unlucky on several occasions not to make a sizeable break but as Mark had played in the handicap finals the night before he looked very sharp and made several good breaks including a 41. Billiards can be such a fickle game and in the final the night before the balls did not quite run Mark’s way but tonight they did and he took full advantage. The score line didn’t really reflect the game and as I said earlier Mick was very unlucky with the run being against him. We thought Dave would be there by this time but he had been delayed by a free bar, oh dear. He appeared about ten minutes later in a very happy mood indeed! We eventually got the game going and Dave was playing some extraordinary billiards with balls flying into pockets from all angles which was very entertaining for all concerned apart from the referees, I suspect. I was playing a bit better than of late and played reasonably consistently to run out the winner but Dave played some good shots to get to over 100. I don’t think I have ever had my hand shaken and been apologised to that many times during a game and Dave, of course I forgive you and still love you! On the billiards front although the top of the league is pretty much decided , with us having a couple of tricky games to play, the other end of the league is still in the balance and will be very close, it could even end in a play off. Another great evening with the West Byfleet lads and many thanks to them for making billiards nights fun, entertaining and friendly. P.S. Dave was last seen disappearing down the road with a drink in either hand to be picked up by his wife, I just hope his ears are OK this morning!
