MAURICE POULAIN 1922 - 2010

I am sorry to report that our much loved and respected league President, Maurice Poulain, passed away at Maple House Nursing Home in Aldershot on 31st May 2010 following a long illness.

I first met Maurice in 1970 at Walton Conservative Club. At that time Walton Cons had many top players in the league and Maurice was in the A team. I started in the Division Four team and straight away Maurice had encouraging words and was very nice to me. This was not always common at that time as some of the other 'stars' were not as helpful. It meant a lot to me and it set an example that I have tried to follow. Along with Bob Mason, Maurice played a big part in arranging a league trip to Jersey and I was lucky enough to be selected to play in the team. It was a wonderful trip and still holds very happy memories. The Jersey league presented us with a Trophy that is played for annually as the Triples competition. We had a weekend in Jersey, played matches at the Jersey Mechanics and Institute Club, stayed in a nice hotel, all for £35.00 including a flight there and back. Maurice served on the committee for nearly 30 years and was always enthusiastic about snooker and particularly billiards. As always he was supportive and ensured that meetings were conducted fairly and properly. He acted as compere at many Presentation Evenings and was an excellent communicator with a lovely voice. On retiring from the committee due to failing health and difficulty in travelling, he quietly gave a cheque as a donation to the league. He didn't want it made public or any recognition. It was a mark of the man in that he had already given his time and effort for many many years. Maurice was the perfect figurehead to be our President and he will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by myself and his many friends in the Byfleet League.

With the second and deciding leg to be played at Woking Snooker Centre on Sunday the match is perfectly poised at 6 - 6. South Beds got off to a flying start to lead 3 - 1 and had us on the back foot. It was 4 - 4 after the second two matches and we led 6 - 5 before the South Beds competitor potted blue, pink and black to win his second frame and level the team score.
