CHAMPION SURVIVES SCARES BUT REACHES NUMBER 10!!!!
May 19, 2010
A large crowd turned up at Chertsey SS tonight and witnessed an exciting evenings matches for the Billiards Championship.

MARK LEONARD had to battle hard to contain and eventually overhaul MARTIN COURT in their semi final. MARTIN got off to a good start and built up a good lead until just over halfway and an upset looked on the cards. A spell of non scoring visits enabled MARK to peg back the deficit and a couple of timely 30+ breaks saw him clinch victory by 200 to 123. MARTIN's 40 break being the highest in the match. The scoreline didn't do MARTIN justice and MARK was happy to cross the winning line first.
The other semi between ANDY SMITH and MATT COOKE went all the way with MATT getting off to a fluent start and ANDY struggling. Again the halfway mark proved a turning point in the match with ANDY starting to forge ahead soon after. Victory seemed assured when leading by nearly 30 and needing any score to reach the final. MATT had other ideas and produced a magnificent series of difficult pots to run out with a 28 break to win 200 -199. Cruel for the loser who must have thought, along with the spectators, that he would at least have one chance to win the match.
THE FINAL.
Over 90 minutes play MARK LEONARD was red hot favourite to win comfortably but had to sit and watch MATT build up a 61 - 0 lead. When MARK lead 65 - 61 soon after it seemed that surely he would pull away like in his 9 previous Championship finals. Despite nice breaks of 45 and 38, MARK could never get further than 56 in front and with MATT continuing to hardly miss a potting opportunity the gap was regularly being whittled away. MATT produced a final onslaught with only 10 minutes on the clock left to play and closed the gap to 12 points. With 3 minutes left anything could happen. Both players were now missing shots that earlier seemed easy. The Champion held his nerve and a couple of tricky cannons kept him at the table when the bell went, nursing a 21 lead. MARK ran out the victor 283 - 262.
This 10th consecutive Championship title was MARK's toughest yet and he was quick to praise both MARTIN and MATT for putting him under severe pressure. Despite not producing his best Billiards MARK got the job done though. Congratulations MARK.
Of the finalists MATT should be proud and praised for his performance to not only reach the final but to put up such a bold display. He continues to impress and is still improving. A frightening prospect for the rest of us.
MARTIN played well and put up an excellent show and is a dangerous opponent for anyone.
ANDY had a heartwrenching time being pipped right on the line and was rightfully disappointed but gracious in defeat.
All matches were played in a terrific spirit and it was a night that could so easily have had different endings.
Thanks to Jim Angus and Martyn Mcenroy for refereeing and to Chertsey SS for the use of their tables.
Thanks also to the spectators who came along to support their favourites. They played their part in making it a very enjoyable evening.
