BYFLEET 6 - HARROW 7
December 12, 2008
Our league team put up a gallant and valiant performance against the holders Harrow but finally succumbed on the black in the playoff frame.
The holders go through but team Byfleet should take the credit in a match spoiled by gamesmanship from a talented Harrow team determined to win at all costs. MIKE COUDRAY (56) 1 - 1 DARREN O'SULLIVAN (43) CHRIS BARNARD 0 - 2 JAMES O'SULLIVAN (43 & 30) NEIL CLAYTON 1 - 1 CONNOR TREACY MARK LEONARD (65 & 90) 2 - 0 ANDY LAVIN SEAN HARVEY (50) 1 - 1 JOHN LEAHY (64) STEVEN KERR 1 - 1 NEIL NAGLE SCORE 6 - 6 Playoff decider MARK LEONARD lost to JAMES O'SULLIVAN Mike Coudray was quickly into his stride producing a fluent 56 break in his opening frame going in off when seemingly on for many more. Darren O'Sullivan slowed the game down considerably in the second frame making it a scrappy affair before eventually levelling at 1 - 1. Very indecisive in his choice of shots and taking ages to execute them, O'Sullivan's antics worked for him but did little to entertain or show any skill. Chris Barnard battled hard against an up beat James O'Sullivan and after losing the first following his opponents 43 break looked set to make it 1 - 1 after leading at one stage by 40 points and then by 22 on the brown. O'Sullivan came to the table snookered but swerved the cue ball around the pink, potted the brown and cleared up to force a re - spotted black. Winning the toss he put Chris in but a double kiss when attempting the safety gifted the frame and put Harrow 3 - 1 up. Neil Clayton soon went behind in his opening frame against a skillful Treacy who combined excellent long potting with a fiendish safety game. It looked all over but getting one outside chance Neil showed tremendous character to clear up and snatch an unlikely win. Treacy stuck to his task well and continued to not give away many opportunities and duly levelled at 1 - 1 but only after another spirited fightback by the home player. Mark Leonard against the very well respected Andy Lavin had the look of a cracking match but after both had chances Mark took charge crafting a superb 65 to seal the first and a beautifully constructed 90 in the second, failing on a difficult pink within sight of a possible 103. This game was played in a great spirit. It was 4 - 4 and all to play for when Steven Kerr and Sean Harvey took to the tables. Steven came back very strongly to take the first frame meanwhile Sean had to sit out while the Harrow captain knocked in a battling and frame winning 64 to make the match score 5 - 5. With Steven under pressure and behind Sean had to produce and he did with a fine 50 break. Both these frames finished as they looked like doing and the match ended 6 - 6. The playoff between Mark Leonard and James O'Sullivan was always going to be a tense affair and an extra edge was added after a disagreement over the rules between the two sets of officials, preceeding the frame. It was a close, tight frame with neither being more than 15 points in front at any stage. O'Sullivan looked certain to win when needing a brown to pink clearance but missed an easy pink to the middle when 12 in front. He left it safe and a long and interesting bout of defensive play ensued. Mark nailing every shot to perfection and O'Sullivan was very good to but 'got away with it' on at least two occasions. Mark finally forced his opponent to leave him a chance and potted a superb long pink, screwed off the side cushion and knocked the black from under the side cushion into a potting position. With the cue ball a foot behind the black and both in line for the middle pocket it seemed that only an Act of God could prevent a famous victory. What followed was outrageous. Standing only a few body widths away from Mark, who was down on his shot, O'Sullivan broke the silence by starting to unscrew his cue, presumably resigned to losing. Mark recomposed himself but eventually missed the pot leaving O'Sullivan to put it away. Not an Act Of God but a cardinal sin. In competitive individual matches this is an automatic concession. In this highly charged match it was overlooked. O'Sullivan 'Ebdon style' punched the air with delight, Leonard gracefully shook his hand.
The Byfleet players were magnificent and our league is proud of them all. Their behaviour was faultless. ..................................................................... Written by KJones. Chairman
